You can't believe how silly I feel asking this question, but I can't find the trash to empty it

It's not a silly question.
Maybe not quite a FAQ, but it's often been asked by folks who have migrated here from Ubuntu, etc.

video by dolphin_oracle (back in 2013): AntiX 13.1 - Trashcan for SpaceFM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWebvzhFtjo

As explained in the video, although a trashcan plugin is available for SpaceFM file manager...
the trash feature is not supported by rox-filer.
Also, installation of the "plugin" doesn't change the fact that file deletions performed via terminal emulator command line are not "sent to trashcan"

Thanks, so if something is trashed, it's permanently deleted Smart. Now I have to figure out why I'm out of space :(

any easy way? No.
If you're in a jam, you might find some degree of success by read-only mounting the affected drive
and using "testdisk" or various other forensic data recovery utilities.
