hey guys, I have a serious problem when I do an apt-get update or apt-get upgrade. With a fresh install of antiX, my Allegro / Maestro ES1989s sound card would work. But as I started, when I do a full apt-get update, the sound quits. Alsa mixer won't even open.

Now I tried changing the card to an Rockwell Riptide PCI controller and I can't get it to work at all.

System: Host ********** Kernel 2.6.32-1-mepis-smp i686 (32 bit) Distro antiX-M8.5 Marek Edelman 11 April 2010
CPU: Single core Pentium III (Katmai) (UP) cache 512 KB flags (sse) bmips 1103.58 clocked at 551.323 MHz

Audio: Card Rockwell International Riptide PCI Audio Controller at port 1080 BusID: 00:0c.0
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.21

should I try to do a modprobe to configure this Rockwell or the Allegro sound cards?

Funny that
Code:
alsamixer
won't open in terminal when you show

Quote:
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.21

is Loaded. Gamix does not Open either? Since ALSA is loaded. I see no reason for a modprobe. I had to reboot once because I had a symptom like you describe. But a reboot fixed it.

I have tried rebooting, and I still do not have sound. in fact, many reboots, and still no sound. I wish I could just go back to the original installation, or maybe revert back to the original driver for my riptide or allegro sound cards. In fact, I have never had the riptide sound card working ever. so I guess I should put the allegro sound card back in, for I have at least had sound coming out of the card. and all this did start with the Allegro sound card installed.

The sound driver alsa 1.0.21 is loaded for your card Rockwell International Riptide. Was this card working before?

Have you tried opening in terminal

Code:
alsamixer

Yes, I just tried opening alsamixer in Roxterm and this is what I got:

Code:
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

so I don't know what's going on at this point. the system recognizes the sound card:

Code:
Audio:     Card Rockwell International Riptide PCI Audio Controller
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.21

So??? how can it recognize the card, but drivers installed? not installed?? I don't know.

Recommend that you re-install alsamixer. Had something similar happen to goggles with an update. I was unable to launch it, but a quick re-install did the trick.

You can use synaptic or the terminal via apt-get.

Good Luck,
Nats

I guess I've been Mistaken. Happens frequently, My Bad. My Audio readout on IBM A22m Lappy. I just did a apt-get dist-upgrade on this unit yesterday is why I have the newer alsa (1.0.22.1) than yours.

Code:
Audio:     Card Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24/30 [CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] driver Sound Fusion CS46xx BusID: 00:05.0
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.22.1

My driver is

driver Sound Fusion CS46xx BusID: 00:05.0

I guess you don't have a driver loaded. Since you never posted a full audio readout. And since I saw alsa loaded. I presumed (since I am not looking over your shoulder) that a driver was present. Looks like when you update and upgrade. Debian testing drops support for your card( just a guess). Have to google that chip

on your card to know for sure.

You will find out for sure when you do a modprobe on that card and it says no cards detected. Using antixcc>Hardware>configure sound system. I know I stated earlier that that should not be needed. But after reading your full inxi -F readout. I now know that the driver is not loaded (for whatever reason). Sorry you are having such a pain with this. But Debian Testing sometimes drops hardware support for older gear.

well, I'm definitely getting rid of the riptide and sticking with the maestro sound card that I also have. If I remember correctly, my Dad had issues with a riptide sound card and one of this cd or dvd drives around the turn of the millenium. oh well. Now to solve a bigger issue. Seek a new post under full apt-get dist-upgrade.
