Wow ....................is all I can say

Nice distro you have here!

I just installed antix on a throw away (Win98) laptop, and I have to say it is very fast, loaded with goodies like streamtuner and a network manager that just works. Very nice art details also.
I normally use puppy3 to puppy4 but I like not running in root too.
This is going to be my main box for awhile.
Thank you!!

Glad you like it! antiX is, in my opinion, the best lightweight distro there is. Mepis kernel, smxi capabilities, excellent OOTB look, great community (here and at MepisLovers), and anti tying it all together! It "just works". Welcome to antiX!

Welcome andrea.

Puppy is a great distro but I think you will find that antix is a little more full-featured and a more complete Linux OS.

Yes, a bit more complex but a standard linux right? That is what I want as puppy is normally run as root instead of a regular user profile(bad for me as I'm messing with the settings all the time)

Yes, it's pretty much standard debian under the hood. There are a few Mepis configs and some little surprises tossed in for fun.

Add the smxi script with sidux and sid repos and your cutting edge.

I think I know what you mean by the sid repos (Debian testing sharp edge stuff)
Can you tell me what and where the..smxi script and sidux is?
Sorry if these are dumb questions! I just got here :D
Thanks,

Andrea,

Sidux is a Debian-based distro. It is based on Debian Sid (unstable) but the Sidux dev's do everything they can to "tame the beast". In other words it is a almost-as-stable-as-you-can-get version of Debian Sid. You can read about it here: http://www.sidux.com/

smxi is a script written by h2 for various tweaks. It does numerous things and I am not very experienced with it... maybe someone else can enlighten you but you can read about it here: http://techpatterns.com/forums/about736.html

There is more about smxi in the antiX wiki - http://sblinux.org/antix/index.html
(and a lot of other info too :D )
It's at the very bottom of the page:
(Edit: I can't get the link to work, so use the main link above.)

And welcome to antiX!

You can use the smxi script to dist-upgrade regularly. It watches for package version mismatches so you don't install anything that would break your system. Smxi also allows you to install and remove sidux and debian kernels and their modules. Part of the script can be run stand alone to just get video drivers or run as part of the upgrade. There are also ways to clean up your system by removing old logs and back ups as well as removing unwanted crud to regain space. It comes installed on your system and ready to use.

To try it out do CTL-ALT-F1 to get to a console, log in as root and the first thing it will ask is "Do you want to kill X" answer yes. Follow the initial set up closely so you get what you want but this can be changed later. The next time you run smxi it will go straight to the upgrading.

Enjoy.

For orientation on smxi, there is now a new entry in the MEPIS Wiki that might help:
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Smxi
Good luck--let us know if you have questions or run into problems.

Nah, they have a few of them. The MEPIS Lovers and antiX forums have not only friendly, but cooperative and helpful people as well. Neither of them have a lock on this, but this place does have some of the finest people around. No question about the distribution is ignored. We also work hard to keep things friendly and cooperative, so I am glad that you appreciate it!
