antiX-M8 goes final

antiX-M8 goes final

Postby anticapitalista on Fri Feb 13, 2009 3:23 pm

On behalf of the antiX-team I am proud to announce that antiX MEPIS 8 'Intifada' - a fast and light complete desktop and livecd based on SimplyMEPIS and Debian Testing, with a little bit of sidux,- is now available in full and base editions. This release defaults to a fully customised icewm desktop (fluxbox is also installed) In addition to the SimplyMEPIS 8.0 foundation with its 2.6.27-15 kernel and Assistants, antiX has an improved antiX-Control Centre, new scripts for screenshots, and phonebook. There are improved and extended themes and artwork for icewm and fluxbox. Localisation is much improved in this version. As well as including usual applications such as iceweasel(3.0.6), pigin(2.4), abiword(2.6.4), gnumeric(1.8-3), rox-filer(2.8) and claws-mail(3.5), antiX-M8 also includes the sidux meta-installer, an updated ceni and wicd for wired/wireless connections, UMTSmon - a simple connect program for users using 3g usb modems, firehol firewall, gnomebaker replaces brasero, urxvt replaces wterm. antiX-M8 has X.org 7.3, auto-login with latest SLiM, smxi, inxi, svmi scripts from h2, and Dillo 2. New apps include: zim (wiki), Gjots (notes), Grsync, parted and luckyBackup.

AntiX is designed to work on computers with as little as 64 MB RAM and Pentium II or equivalent AMD processors, but not K5/K6 processors. 128 MB RAM is recommended minimum.

Woo hoo! I am already getting busy spreading the word. Put a note on the USALUG, will blog about it, and let others know as much as I can!

Of course, I am grabbing a new image myself! :-)

... and here I am with an official version of antiX-M8 (not just updates). I am running this live, in RAM, with Broadcom 4311 wireless working. That alone cuts down the number of systems that can even accomplish those things. A recent test PCLinuxOS version can't, for instance.

I just KNEW this one would be great. It has been working well for me since the very first test copy and continues to work really well, no problems at all.

I found the upgrader script from 7.5 to 8. I'm using 8 public-test 1 right now. Is the script OK for me to use too? Also what will happen with the other apps I have installed like oo.org, gimp, etc? Will it uninstall some of them, so that I'll need to reinstall them? Would it be better if I just upgraded using the repos? Will I get the full icewm update that way? I'm still using fluxbox and wbar mostly, but I like to try icewm too. Thanks!!

Hi mariel77.

The upgrader script _should_ keep your old apps, in fact openoffice will probably get upgraded to the latest in MEPIS 8 repos.
There is no 100% guarentee, but from public-test 1, I would say it is 98% certain to be ok.

masinick,

glad to hear that the final is working well for you in livecd mode.
antiX-M8 is a great release thanks to Warren at MEPIS, the Debian team, the sidux team and the great people here that have contributed in a variety of ways.
I hope I remembered everyone in the Release Notes.

I think you caught most of the participants. If someone was inadvertently left out, I know that it was not intentional. You did mention how the entire community has helped out, so that is pretty all encompassing!

I came back here with another system, my trusty old Dell Latitude D600 laptop. Until recently this was my main laptop. I love the keyboard - it is not prone to skipping, selecting and erasing text like the keyboard on the Gateway, or even the nice Lenovo. The keyboard is a bit stiffer, but it still works well. Problem with this box is that the hard drive is about ready to die - in fact, I've already lost sidux and antiX hard drive images on this box, leaving me to boot from Live CD and then either run Live or boot into XP (which I use three times a week to manage a Front Page XP mailing list).

As expected, the D600 quickly and immediately got everything right. That's one thing I love about Dell boxes. They usually work because so many of them are sold, so there are lots of engineers who want THEIR laptop to work. Being that this one is at least 3-4 years old, maybe older than that, hardware support is 100% and perfect.

AntiX hums on this box, running it live from RAM. Two for two on my test boxes!

I was at the office the other day and they have a DSL line there. Well naturally I had to download Antix 8.0 and it runs just great! Then I installed Antix and downloaded KDE core (apt-get install kde-core) now I am running KDE on Antix without the "window dressing software". Needless to say it is quick! It is now running on a Pentium4 with 3 1024MB ram chips. Sweet. Now to slim it down a bit would quicken it up even more. Thanks Anti!! :)
