How many folks would find utility in a server edition of antiX? Just the basics for home use -- CUPS (for print server), Samba (for Windows file server), Lighttpd of course. Just server-related apps, nothing else. ... No, I am not volunteering for the project.

I have version 8 test ???? set up as a file/print server. It uses cups, samba, openssh-server and tightvnc-server. I left it stock this time but I usually strip out what I don't need on it such the multimedia apps, office stuff and graphics packages.

I don't use it for a web server and my bandwidth won't permit outside access so i don't use lighttpd but it works very well for a simple fast web server.

the box is a Celeron 466 with 256mb of ram. It has two hard drives, a 10 gig for the OS and a 250 gig which is shared out for storage and back ups.

A dedicated version may be of interest for a lot of people. I will have to think about it.

I am using what my University-senior daughter refers to as THE BRICK (Toshiba 4015CDS) as our household LAN's print server, antiX 8 of course. It has hosted my web pages before (running antiX 7), and probably will again before the weekend is over. Was her first laptop, I think I gave her $150 for it out of kindness (she paid a foolish $300).

Here is my vision -- totally bare bones server distro running print server, Samba (gag), lighttpd, VSFTP/PROFTP, and of course the standard antiX interface. No sound, no games, no Streamtuner (one of my favorite aps), no multimedia, no email, maybe Foxfire to view locally-generated web pages. Kompozer an absolute must. Someone really adventurous could set up SendMail, but I've never gone that far into hosting.

I'd volunteer to do it if I was experienced enough, but at this point I remove packages and wait to see what doesn't work. Besides, my wife already "comments" on how much time I spend with fingers on keyboard.

One way to do this is to install antiX-base and then use the meta-installer to get what you need for server.

If you give me the details of which apps should be installed then I can add it to the options in the meta-installer.

At the moment there is an option to install Server/Local-webserver. Apps installed:
apache2
apache2-utils
apache2-mpm-prefork
php5 php5-common
mysql-server
mysql-common
libapache2-mod-php5
php5-mysql
phpmyadmin

This is probably too heavy though.

Some packages are already included. I would suggest Lighttpd, either VSFTP or ProFTP, OpenSSH (for remote administration), CUPS and Samba. Some individuals might also want MySQL and a robust firewall. A couple of editors, maybe leafpad for when in the X-windows environment and nano for when accessing the server via SSH (Putty).

I am sure others will have suggestions. These are only mine.
