I had the same issue when i tried Mepis pre 7. I have an on board via82xx sound card. The correct module seems to be loaded and i ran alsaconf to be sure (snd_via82xx). The device will not show up in the mixer to adjust and I get an error:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I can't seem to figure this out. What am I missing here? While using Kubuntu sound worked fine with this driver as well with other distros I've tried out on this box(Xandros,Sabayon etc.)

Any suggestions?

I have the same sound driver working on my box.

There is an update of the Mepis kernel and alsa stuff 'waiting'. Maybe this will fix it.
An apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

Make sure the alsa-modules get installed too.

After reboot sound should work.

I suspect that the problem may be with alsaconf rather than antiX. So if sound is working, then don't run alsaconf. I did this with e test version of antiX and couldn't use sound afterwards. I had to reinsatll all the alsa stuff.

No luck. I tried a dist-upgrade and I'm current so I reinstalled alsa then reloaded it (/usr/sbin/alsa reload) and still no sound. It's asking me if my sound card is configured or is something blocking it. How would I check?

I noticed this on a reboot:

Alsa: cannot find slot for index 0

and this:

ACPI: unable to turn on cooling device

What is "index 0"? All my fans are on and the box isn't over heating.

What next?

Edit: I noticed that there is a pop sound when shutting down if this means anything.

Do you have any devices plugged in? That *might* be a cause.
Also try playing an audio cd via xmms rather than an mp3 or vice-versa.
Does dvd play with sound?

You might have to blacklist the sound.

Ok I got it. There seems to be a conflict with my web cam(Logitech Quickcam 3000). I unplugged the camera and rebooted an now have sound. No loss for the camera though, I hardly ever use it.

Does dvd play with sound?

No. I get this error when I tried a dvd with Mplayer.

Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device

Video files do play with sound through XMMS.

Ok glad sound works.

To get dvd to work you need to configure gmplayer.

Open video, right-click on the blue screen>Preferences>Video>xv

Close and reopen and all should work.

Not really, but what happens if you plug in your camera after booting?
Any sound?

The sound will still work without issue. The camera also seems to be recognized. When I open Xcam I don't get an image but this was also true right from the start. The camera does light up and xcam sees it just no preview. When I reboot with the camera plugged in I'm back to no sound.

Well at least you got sound working and the possibility of getting your camera to work too.

Just don't forget to leave it plugged in when you reboot

The problem may have something to do with the camera being a usb device.
