You didn't need to install smxi for test1, it is already installed. Also, it is probably better to use smxi rather than Mepis repos to install nvidia drivers.

I know, but I installed the 'newer' smxi version (as a work-in-progress there probably is a newer version all the time..... ). Regarding nvidia driver installation: normally I just grab the proper .run file from Nvidia and run it.
Installing GoogleEarth through smxi could be improved, I think. Although the installed app works OK the installation took ages and was accompanied by a lot of (seemingly identical) error lines.
Oops, forgot to take notes...
Note: grabbing the .bin file and manually installing it is MUCH faster
