IceWM Part 2

Postby OU812 on Sun Jun 22, 2008 7:52 am

Hello. I put together this theme kinda by accident. Anti and I were discussing which icons to use in the control center and one thing led to another (the screenshot shows the icon set currently being used). Basically, the wall and window style are ones that I've been wanting to use for awhile. The gtk2 themes just sort of fell into place - I've been toying with the idea of having a light theme for users and a darker theme for root; I think it works quite nicely here. Conky is from erie.

I also took out a few things from the panel as these things are accessible from the keyboard, which I'm finding is much more convenient than mouse access (especially on a laptop).

Please enjoy.

Wow!! I have never been much of a fan of IceWM, not because of it's functionality, because it's certainly fast and works great, but mainly because i don't like the way that it looks, and all the themes that i have seen so far have been..... well, let's say "OK" at best.

But this one looks absolutely GREAT!!! I'd like to see a screenshot with the "right-click" menu in (if you have one) just to see how that looks, but just looking at that picture, makes me think "Yeah, i'd use that". You're doing great work with antiX & IceWM John. :)

Thanks for your kind words. I can't believe that icewm can look so modern. I just wish that there were more themes being developed currently for icewm - it seems that output has slowed down considerably over the last few years, especially compared to openbox. Here's a screenshot for djinn - or anyone else that's curious about the start menu:

Image

Note: The orange folder icon on the taskbar is actually from the "thinblack" theme - I just pasted in the icons folder. The volume icon is from the same icon set that was used in the previous screenshot as are the icons at the top of the start menu. Please see the icewm thread in tips and tricks for more info.

Thanks - and yes, icewm can look modern (it's just that most of themes aren't).

OU812 is 'our' icewm expert.
Very nice, makes me want to give icewm more time.

How did you get aumix to look so nice?

Thanks for the screenshot John, that look's really good. Is the theme you're using generally available or did you put it together yourself? I really like the icons used in the file manager as well. The whole thing just "Doesn't" strike me as "Typical" IceWM, if you know what i mean? :)

I know what you mean about the themes thing..... it seems that the only ones available are the same ones that have "always" been available.

I'm going to give it a try over the next few weeks/months just to see how good it really is & how configurable etc.

The mixer icon is from the icon set in the screenshot. Just modify your ~/.icewm/toolbar file

Code: Select all
prog "Volume" /usr/share/icons/gTangish-2.0a1/16x16/apps/arts.png absvolume

and see my icewm thread in the tips and tricks section for the absvolume package.

OOPS! You meant the mixer window. I'm just using the faux glass style and the murrinabluray theme. Flippin' sweet...

The overall theme was put together from existing components:

Wall

Theme (style)
http://www.box-look.org/content/show.ph ... tent=73238
Icons

Gtk2 Themes
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show. ... tent=51073
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show. ... tent=52672

Note: The icons and themes seem to work better if you copy them to /usr/share/icons/ and /usr/share/themes/ respectively.

Enjoy!

Thanks, Sakasa. Unfortunately, I am just the person who puts the "quilt" together; it's others who are making the "squares." Perhaps one day I'll take some existing icewm styles and piece together a new style (I have some ideas already), and then develop the skills to make one that is completely my own (I love the originality of the fauxglass theme, I hope I can match it).

Here is a peek at the icewm 'default' (maybe) for the next release of antiX.

All credit goes to OU812 for this (apart from the wallpaper/conky)

Here's an updated screenshot. Conky is borrowed from the mint fluxbox project and features some minor tweaks on my part. The xmms skin comes from winamp. The icons are managed by idesk; I decided to use them because my taskbar was getting cluttered with too many buttons. I thought the icons would be a good compromise since placing them near the panel gives the sense of having extra buttons. Finally, you see a sneak preview of the new control center that anti and I have been working on. (We've also been working on a custom icewm antix theme, but don't tell anyone.)

Enjoy!
