portable videos

I have noticed lately that with a few DVD's I rented recently that there is a built in means of ripping and converting the movies for use on a portable player. Has any one tried this? I assume it's only for windows. At least you don't have to circumvent copy protection with this.

I would be interested to here from anyone who has tried it.
