Hi all just installed the latest antiX but cant install gaim or pidgin.
Is there any way around this problem, seems gaim is dependent on pidgin and pidgin is dependent on libpango which synaptic says I have if I'm correct the mepis version of libpango.
Thanks for your help.

Anti has stated that he will try to put Pidgin into the final release if there is room. Although a Messenger program is a 'must have' for me, I don't need it today. (My primary system is a PCLinuxOS system that has Kopete.)
Guess you could snatch the current version of libpango and install it but you might be risking breaking your system. There must be some valid reason that Mepis has version 1.16.5-1 rather than 1.18.1 as the current. It isn't like Warren is retaining older versions of libraries just to tease us.

Decided to poke around and see what messenger programs are available at the moment.
One of them, ayttm, isn't quite as sexy as Gaim or Pidgin or Kopete, but it at least works. I was able to use my AIM and MSN Messenger accounts at the same time.
Cenrterim, but it has a pretty crude look and feel.
So, pending the availability of Pidgin, Ayttm will at least get you online and talking.

I have pidgin working on AntiX-M7-rc1. Noted no glitches....works fine.
Not sure how I installed it. I believe with Synaptic. Never used it before and am impressed. Like it better than Gaim.

pidgin and gstreamer are on antiX-M7-rc2.
antiX is still less than 300MB (just).
For those using earlier versions of antiX-M7, you could do this:
aptitude install pidgin.
This will give you the first option of removing libpango (and something else). Accept this.
If you then do an
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
it will now also upgrade brasero, but hold back cpp, gcc etc. All worked ok on this box.
You can still install kde apps, gimp without problems. _________________ Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

Well done. Thank you.
You didn't mention that you first need to "su" to root ... but if one doesn't know that, then one should perhaps not be playing with aptitude anyway! _________________ Proudly marching to the beat of a different kettle of fish.

If you don't need the latest version, if you disable the testing repos, gaim will install with no problems from the stable (etch) repos. This is in antiX rc1.
Thanks for including pidgin on the next release!

Thanks mariel77 for the information those that want a more 'stable' version of antiX. antiX-M7 is so very flexible (with its good and bad points) and hopefully will appeal to a broad range of users.
BTW I don't really like pidgin. I found it a bit heavy in terms of opening and in terms of size. I actually prefer ayttm. _________________ Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

| It's good that you added pidgin, an alternative would be to put a link in browser to www.meebo.com
