Well, congrats I really love the new theme and of course the renaming of the default wallpaper. It seems that it boots faster too. I have a couple of old desktops piling up in the front closet that have been donated for some of the kids who don't have computers in our H.S group and this weekend I will try installing AntiX on them. Do you think it would be better to add the kde-edu or gnome-edu packages, trying to figure out which would run better.

Hello lydia,

I would think that the gnome-edu packages would be better as antiX has quite a few gnome apps/libs.

It would be nice to know how those kids cope with antiX (and fluxbox or icewm).

Hello moron.

Thanks for the feedback. It shows that even with 64MB RAM + swap, antiX runs well once installed. I think it will also run 'reasonably' well with 48MB RAM.

Great job! (and a question or two...)

Postby Subito Piano on Sat Oct 20, 2007 5:26 am

First -- just a very nice job! I've been a Mepis user for a couple years now -- but have always turned to Puppy for my low-end machines. However, i've just tried out antiX at both home and the school where i teach -- and instantly i can network everything, impose passwords, and share printers -- even with our slower computers. Really nice to be able to use either Mepis or antiX...and not having to re-learn everything for a different distro!!! Especially nice now that we've encountered a rather nasty virus on a Windows machine. (THAT teacher just switched to Linux :D)

RC2 seems a nice little improvement over the initial release (login, appearance, streamtuner). Now, can one have a pinboard with icons and retain the background wallpaper? I couldn't figure out how to do that. Also -- i easily managed to turn the pinboard on automatically thru your instructions at antix.mepis.org BUT it might be a nice nod to us neophytes if we could choose both the WM and whether or not to use the pinboard at the login screen. (This is similar to the Mepis login screen and is exactly what Vector 5.8 [or Gold?] does.) Alternatively, perhaps antiX could remember the user's last choice for the next reboot: if i choose to engage the pinboard, it automatically engages it upon reboot and vice-versa. What do you think?

Also, is there search function or an option to log a preselected user in automatically? I didn't see either...

Anyway -- very nice work! Independent schools like ours have to take what they are offered and your work is making it quite worthwhile to do just that. Beyond that, there's just the satisfaction of standing up against the rampant comsumerism in our culture (gee, and i'm a capitalist!!)

Nice job and a hearty THANK YOU!

Yes I am inclined to agree with you about gnome. Most of the kids seem to be attracted to fluxbox while the parents seem to like icewm. The ice menu seems to confuse the younger children.

I've got antiX M7 rc2 installed and running good! Everything went just fine with the installation and all, definitely impressed with it so far!
