Wallpaper in Fluxbox

Postby pedro1hayling on Fri Apr 17, 2009 12:22 am

Hi Folks:

I have a query about Fluxbox -

I'm running Antix 7.5 on my laptop - all seems fine, but why does it not remember which wallpaper I've selected? I have not experienced this with any other distro.

I have downloaded some really nice "Fantasy" backdrops but am getting tired of constantly having to go in and re-select them for each session.

Any clues?

Thanks:

Where did you put the wallpapers? In ~/Wallpaper?

The control centre should set it up to stay.

Check that ~/.config/nitrogen has 3 .cfg files. One for icewm, one for fluxbox and one for bg saved which should be a sym link to fluxbox.(fb).cfg

Ok Tnx guys.

Problem just solved - I'm Putting the wallpapers into ~/wallpapers under the home folder, but had just noticed that folder had duplicated itself for some reason - now deleted ! Also have been changing the wallpaper from the "Menu" - fluxbox wallpapers (Not control centre) which I have now done and I'm glad to say it now seems to work - I am still getting used to this "Flux" it's wierd not having a "Traditional" desktop where you can drag and drop items for later use, my main system runs Gnome (Ubuntu) 8.10 - still finding my way around .

Also have a collection of .deb files on disk (Not all available in the repo's) how do I install them ?

dpkg? perhaps?

Be very careful installing deb files from a disk. The main reason being that you may get into all sorts of dependency problems if the debs are either too 'new' or too 'old'. antiX is set as a rolling release, ie regular upgrades through synaptic/apt-get is the best way to get new apps or upgrade old ones.
Also, I do not advise getting debs from outside Debian and Mepis (except for respected apps like opera, virtualbox etc) ie don't use Ubuntu debs on antiX.

Oh and glad that the wallpaper seems to be fixed.

Fluxbox does take a while to get used to, but once you have it set up the way you want, it is well worth the effort IMO.

Fluxbox is great, and certainly worth the effort as Anti points out. However, if it feels too uncomfortable for you, you can always try installing an xfce or lxde desktop. You can easily set this up using the metainstaller option from the fluxbox menu.

I was used to Ubuntu, both gnome and xfce, but since finding fluxbox, I haven't gone back. However, there certainly are other options available.

You can also try to set up the rox desktop but I haven't tried that. Perhaps other can help you with that, or possibly there are some help files that can guide someone through the set up.

Thanks Pedro:

Great to get replies - lot of friendly and knowledgeable people out there who have already had the experience.
I'm new to Fluxbox - I had intended to try it b4 but always had either kde or gnome desktops, but despite the wierd set-up I actually am beginning to like it and besides I have already been busy editing and setting up my .Fluxbox .menu file and already have it running how I (think I want it)... ...! It's very fast on my Pent III Laptop, I'm a bit of a "Ham Radio" enthusiast and have several applications set up and running already and so far it's all systems go.

I like the very basic menu system from which you can choose your apps, and of course you can set them up anyway you like virtually - it's the simplicity that makes it so appealing and for once there's no "Eyecandy" or compiz or any of that stuff - I need this machine to run clean and clutter free which it does and it just gets on with it.

What more could you ask ?

This is Antix 7.5 and am considering updating to 8.0 (If Poss)... if it's not too much hassle - be interesting to get info on that...

Also - wonder if anyone reading this knows of any decent screenshot application I can use on this sytem, I have shutter as a .deb file but it wont install and it's not in the repo's,
any clues? getting late here now must get some zzz's will check back tomorrow.

Glad to hear that you and fluxbox are getting along!

There is an excellent screenshot application in antiX, at least antix 8 and it's right on the fluxbox menu. It's a script called: screenshotantix.sh

I'm not sure if it's installed in 7.5 though. Perhaps some one else can tell you.

Best regards,

Pedro

I don't remember if it was in 7.5 or not but I wrote a screenshot script and then OU812 wrapped gtkdialog around it. It worked very well. It will definitely be in 8 if you upgrade.

Hi
with regard to the grabbing screenshots in antix -

there is an app, in 7.5 but it grabs to whole screen and you would need to go in and edit it with gimp or something, besides which it only saves in .jpg format - I did'nt want to install graphics stuff on this machine, which would mean transferring it over to my "other" box. It's all about time I guess !
