Tried control center-->hardware-->configure sound system, and card isn't detected. Adjust mixer pops up and disappears.

Output of aplay -l
aplay: device_list:235: no soundcards found...

Output of lspci | egrep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Did the sound work in the live-cd?
Also you may try to run alsamixer directly from the terminal (it's the same as 'Adjust mixer'). I've heard some cases of things not opening from the Control center, then make sure everything you need is unmuted (hit 'm' to mute/unmute).

One thing you could try too is like the post post16507.html?hilit=alsa#p16507 . After deleting that file I think a reboot or maybe just running alsaconf would recreate it.

With live CD, startup sound plays but nothing after that. Same results from control panel-->hardware, etc. In installed version or live CD, amixer command gives, "mixer attach default error: No such file or directory." Also, when live CD booting, I see "error loading HDA codec snd hda codec realtek" (paraphrasing). Tried to delete the alsa config file in installed Antix and got nothing, but could be that I have tried so many diff fixes at this point that I need a fresh install. Seems like kernel is failing to load the codec (that is probably off the mark semantics-wise, but anyway...), even tho lspci shows proper sound card. Summary: My problem exists in live CD and latest updates to newest installed version.

If it's the same with the live-cd maybe reinstalling won't make any difference (considering that the ISO is right and the cd properly burnt).
I'm no expert in this and right now don't have an idea but if I come to think about something then I post.

Well... I tried installing the Realtek drivers for Linux, but the install failed. Any ideas of how to go about this? Drivers from http://218.210.127.131/downloads/downlo ... false#High Definition Audio Codecs .

Error:
Code:
The file /lib/modules/2.6.32-1-mepis-smp/source/include/INCLUDE_VERSION_H does not exist.
Please install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution
or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel
sources (default is /lib/modules/2.6.32-1-mepis-smp/source).
make all-deps

Tried the manual install in alsa-drivers. Errors are basically that files are missing from /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.32-1-common.

I built the alsa modules using the module assistant (m-a) and moved them into the linux src directory from the mepis one, but still no go. (I really don't know what I am doing; I have tinkered with modprobe for nvidia drivers on another computer, but I'm out of my league here.)

can you post the output of these commands run one at a time, as a user in terminal?

lspci -k

cat /proc/asound/cards

cat /proc/asound/version

also what type of computer are you using, brand and model#

run in terminal

inxi -F

cheers,

Ok, thanks, just as suspected the kernel driver is not being loaded, there is a thread on ubuntu, that has many options to try and get your sound going, just remember antiX does not use sudo, use su or sux instead of sudo when going to root.
Be sure to read the first post carefully, lots of important info there, after reading it you will want to try and append your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with the options shown under Compaq, and if none of those work, then try the Hp ones, of course since you have a desktop, don't use the ones for laptop :) Hopefully one of the options will work for you.
One other option is to use smxi and install the liquorix kernel which may or may not fix the problem, but at least another option to look at.

Here's the thread:

Alright, I'm confused. I did the following:

Tried
options snd-hda-intel model=realtek
options snd-hda-intel model=compaq
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
options snd-hda-intel model=hp
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

Nothing worked.

With options snd-hda-intel model=hp still set (not sure if this made a difference, since I had no luck after a reboot, or at least alsaconf wasn't showing I had a card, and that has meant no sound at all), I was tinkering around with rmmod, alternatively unloading snd_hda_intel and snd_hda_realtek to see if only having one or the other would get me any results. I ended up using the -w flag for snd_hda_realtek, /at the moment/ I have sound, even though alsaconf stalls since realtek is locked and waiting to be unloaded. Amixer, flash websites, and gxine have sound. Is there any way I can make sure I keep my sound thru a reboot?

Huh, this is new, too:

cat: /proc/asound/cards
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfdff8000 irq 25

cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23.
Compiled on Jul 18 2010 for kernel 2.6.32-1-mepis-smp (SMP).

Something must have worked. Wish I knew what. Going to reboot.

I think the hp modprobe.d option fixed it, but when I would run alsaconf as a quick check, alsaconf would screw things up. So when I interfered with alsaconf's screwy unloading/reloading of modules, the sound actually worked. My reasoning might be off, but anyway, after I run alsaconf, no sound. When I then run modprobe snd-hda-intel, I get sound, and I have sound at reboot, as well. Thanks, guys. I really like this distro and hope sound stays fixed.

Great, glad you got it going, takes some tweaking sometimes, but usually someone here or at MepisLovers will have a good suggestion, best two forums I've found, lot's of helpful people at both places.

cheers,
