Howdy, all!

After scraping drawers, bank accounts, begging and pleading for some mulla, I can finally afford a new computer

I have about $1,000. I'm looking for at least a multi-threading, full mltithreading Intel i7 chip. Ram and HD space is not terribly important as I need something to upgrade mainly. Video card would be good, but I'm lagging far behind on current cards. Onboard video is supposed to be good these days, but I don't know.

I do podcasts and edit videos that are normally about 4 to 8 minutes. The biggest video clips would be 45 minutes. I shoot pictures in RAW with a Nikon.

So far, I found the following:

http://zareason.com/Mediabox-565.html

http://zareason.com/Mediabox-560.html

https://slimbook.es/en/store/slimbook-o ... i7-comprar

BTW, Slimbook makes a compelling MacBook Air look-alike: https://slimbook.es for those of you who miss that form factor.

@Rocketnji, you once told me which i7 was fully multitasking once, HD or something else?

Thanks for your input. Can't wait to put Antix on something modern like that.

For video work, I suggest a SSD and 6 GB of ram as a minimum.

If you are really after the latest and greatest, can you hold fire for a while?

AMD have a totally new platform coming out, and that will force Intel to refresh Kaby Lake again.

I forget if you mean me. I post so much everywhere I can't remember half of what I have posted.
I used to recommend a amd cpu laptop that had great graphics and was 199 buck brand new on amazon.
I guy I knew on Linux Questions spoke very highly of it for the small price.
But it sounds you want a ton of horsepower to me. So that amd HP laptop I know of probably won't cut the mustard.

Above screen resolution and being a linux friendly unit was what that user at LQ liked the best about it.
Plus the cheap price.

But in your case maybe. The deal breaker is

It's so much that I want a lot of horsepower but a good platform I can upgrade later, hence a desktop over a laptop.

As far as a laptop, I was considering a Chrome notebook or something sub-$500 I can work with while away from the desktop. Unless I can get that Slimbook later.

If I recall, you said the Intel i7 K were multithreading and not the HDs?

I was a big fan of AMD back in the late 90s and early 2000. I'm glad to hear they are back in the game. I can wait a little for their new chips to hit the street. Does anyone know of an ETA for that?

I have a pretty "low end" Lenovo N22 Chromebook. The plus factors are that it's well built, solid, and pretty inexpensive. The minus side is the unit is rather low end and the performance, though "solid" would qualify as SLOW for anyone with equipment 3 years old or less.

The higher end Chromebooks might be nice, but I've had two Chromebooks: a 2010 Google CR-48 Chromebook prototype and the Lenovo N22. Boot times are excellent, but interactive response is not a strength. They're mostly good for fairly casual browsing unless you move up to a mid to high end version, and they're definitely "network and I/O bound in terms of their strengths and limitations, though a heavily CPU bound process would also cripple them quickly. Opening the cover and accessing the Internet within 3-5 seconds and doing stuff like mostly reading with occasional page input are their strengths.

I've not personally owned one, but a friend of mine has had at least one, possibly a couple of the System 76 units. They start @ $699 for the Lemur, which is an i7-based system and go up a lot in price as you add features or upgrade to a fancier model, but they're great and they are virtually guaranteed to run with Linux - and you can get them with the latest version of Ubuntu - then put what you like on them.

I've had good experiences with Dell and HP laptops and I currently own a Dell Inspiron 5558 at home and a Latitude E7450 at work. They're solid. I can't remember the HP units I've owned, but I think I've had a 5000 series in the past. Lenovo - former IBM - Thinkpads are excellent too.

Thanks Brian, that's really helpful. I was wondering if I would get a notebook or a tablet. Both would serve as a way to browse the internet, do some writing and watching Netflix when I need to be mobile.

Tablets, in a way I find irritating.
But the Samsung tab A is worth the extra cost. JMHO

Netbooks.
HP Stream has eMMC memory instead of a hdd. With only 32 GB at that. It took me 3 hours to clean install Win 10 and update it.
Then gave it away. I was able to get MX 16 installed and to run on it. Just as slow as Win 10. Just so know what I found.

That's good to know. Notebooks are seriously limited and I don't feel comfortable running a Chromium version of Linux. At least, because I'm not versed in it yet.

A tablet is limited, but at least I know it and can work around that. Sometimes I sit in a coffee shop and only need to do light browsing, email and light writing.

HP Stream cost about the same as the Samsung tab A. And they both can do light browsing, email and light writing.

Thanks Shay, good to know since I'm equally unimpressed with Samsung's Tizio rework of Android. I'll be looking into HP then!

Have you considered doing your own build.

Check Newegg and see what they offer I have seen some super deals on kit bundles.

I think you could find a kit bundle that would give you what you need and have some money left over for adding additional extras.

Just some thoughts.

Thanks Poorguy,

It's a good idea and I've been looking into https://pcpartpicker.com/ as well. I'll check out Newegg. Forgot about them.
