On May 23 I will be doing a free presentation to a large audience on Linux

Here is a quick outline of what, I will be covering.

I will keep it as simple as possible. So people with little, or no experience with installing ,or running Linux can understand it.

Reasons to switch to Linux
Microsoft on longer supports the system hardware, and the OS your using.
Linux is more secure in the internet environment.( the reasons why)

Pre-install
Bios setting: to boot from CD/DVD drive, and the change need to run a "non-plug, and play" OS
Use of the “live” Linux disk
Saving personal files from Windows to a usb drive.(during the live disk session)
Setting up a wireless connection.

Installing the OS and install options.
Update after the install, and how to keep the system up to date.
(some Linux distributions do not have an auto-updater)

If anyone can see anything I need to add. Without going into great detail. Let me know,
I will be doing future presentations going into more details on Linux..
BTW antiX s now available to anyone using the club's file server, that is also shared with the University of Delaware.

This article Can Ubuntu save online banking? quotes a bank CIO saying he wants all their customers to use a Linux LiveCD for ttheir online banking. The LiveCD environment is inherently more secure than an installed system because installed software/malware does not survive a reboot.

We've tried to provide a number of options to allow you to make an antiX LiveCD or LiveUSB that is both secure and convenient. For example, you can installed software and set bookmarks on a LiveUSB and then run the remaster-live program to save these changes. You can then give this LiveUSB to your grandmother for her online banking and it will be customized for her needs but she won't be able to permanently install new system software (or even permanently change her bookmarks).

An intermediate solution is to enable home persistence on a LiveUSB (you still have the option of customizing it first with remaster-live). This would allow your grandmother to save bookmarks but still no changes to the system (outside of the /home directory) would survive a reboot.

I'm imagine this is way too much information for your audience but I thought it might be useful background information for you.

If you have access to a windows laptop and a projector, you could even demonstrate booting into a LiveUSB. Only do this if you can practice beforehand with the same equipment that will be used for the talk. One handy trick is to set the BIOS boot order with the LiveUSB plugged in and set the LiveUSB to be the first device to boot and the hard-drive to the 2nd device. When I do this on my systems then it boots the LiveUSB when it is plugged in but boots the hard-drive when the LiveUSB is not plugged in.

If you show how to install software. Install soundconverter. Convert a .wav to .mp3. (.wav loaded on another usb maybe)
Same for winff. (.flv loaded on another usb maybe also)

http://winff.org/html_new/
http://soundconverter.org/

They are both in Debian and AntiX because I used them. Young people in the audience will like that maybe.
Video and Music is a must have in a operating system for the younger generation. Those 2 programs
can be like the hook.

I am using the on-line banking as part of the use of a live disk.
When it come to booting from a USB drive, and making an bootable usb drive will in a future presentation, along with other software available to Linux..
I can't go into a lot of great details, because I have only one, and a half hours to use the room.

Nice idea and let us know how it goes and I for one use a Linux livecd for online banking as my bank and CC sites thankfully do work with Firefox on Linux. One brokerage I use whines about needing Windows but the Useragentswitcher addin for Firefox fixed that one too.

With Windows XP heading out to pasture within the next year its a good time to get people stuck with older machines to look at Linux as a great alternative. With Wine these same people can use Windows apps where there are no Linux equivalents yet (Quickbooks, TurboTax, etc)

Hopefully your presentation goes well, and why not post up a general outline of your presentation so suggestions and feedback can be given :)

Every thing went well, I had a huge audience. More people than what was signed up to take part in the event showed up. Next I'm going work with small groups so, I can answer more questions, and get more technical. .
