Hi antiX-experts,
yesterday I installed antiX and everything ran nicely. Today I upgraded all upgradable packages from the terminal, the download was about 330 MB. After that the computer did not want to shut down, so I forced it down pressing the power button. Now it can not start the graphical interface any more, no matter wich boot option I choose. The boot is normal, but no desktop. Is it possible to rescue the
system somehow or do I have to reinstall? Thank you for your answers in advance. Greetings,
Susanne

:)

Type in 3 at the grub boot screen. Then try the sgfxi script after logging in as root. The script is built in to AntiX.

http://smxi.org/docs/sgfxi-manual.htm

Good luck.

when doing an update you have to remember to answer N to the maintainer config files.
have a look at this http://antix.mepis.org/index.php?title=Main_Page#News
if you have to reinstall a new version of antix is available for tesing, you could install the rc1 build antix-m11-rc1-available-t3007.html i find it easier to install the latest rc1 than updating 8.5 with all the packages.

Hi rokytnji and ICE-M,
thank you for your recent answers. I tried the sgfxi-script, but after the procedure it sent out a message like "failed to install
xserver-xorg-core because of missing dependency: xserver-xorg-video-5 (broken package)". Is there any way to fix it or
will I reinstall?
ICE-M, there are a lot of problems about the new rc1, as I read in the linked thread.
I think in this case I wll rather wait for a more stable version.
Greetings,
Susanne

You might be better off with doing a reinstall Susanne. Takes less time. Next time you do the upgrade, Follow Ice-M advice (he is more proficient in AntiX than I am) and just hit enter instead of typing y then enter when asked to accept the package maintainers version.

When doing a dist-upgrade in 8.5. What I do first is comment out in /etc/apt/sources.list is

Code:
# Goggles music manager
#deb http://apt.progchild.de/ stable main

Because Debian does not maintain it anymore and you will get breakage from it. I also add a user called demo because wicd upgrade breaks without it. You can add user demo Start>Appllications>Other>Mepis User Assistent.

After that it is safer to proceed with AntiX 8.5 upgrade.

I learned these things breaking my installs numerous times over running AntiX. Pay attention to how many things will be removed before agreeing to a apt-get dist-upgrade. If you don't like what may be removed. Then don't agree. 1 or 2 libs is not too bad. If you get 13 to 20 things being removed. Wait for a week for testing to settle down. If wanting to be stable. I advise you comment out

Code:
# Debian Testing.
# Testing enabled for 'rolling' release.
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free

And change in /etc/apt/sources.list by uncommenting

Code:
# Debian Stable
# This will 'soon' be "Squeeze". Use for maximum stability.
# deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
# deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free

to
Code:
# Debian Stable
# This will 'soon' be "Squeeze". Use for maximum stability.
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free

Also. Before Following my advise though. I have not done this so wait for someone else to reply on my post on whether the word stable should be replaced with the word squeeze instead before editing that part of /etc/apt.source.list and trying apt-get dist-upgrade. I hope you know to always do a apt-get update before doing any apt-get dist-upgrade also.

Hi rokytnji,
thank you for your good advice. I thought myself to reinstall and I did it. So now I'm writing from antiX-Iceape alias SeaMonkey. (The name changed after installing the German language-pack) With doing upgrades I will wait for a while and read the instructions carefully. This time I installed with settled wifi-connection from the live-mode and now the connection is there auromatically by login. Before it was not like that. I had to set up the connection each new session. Okay so far, I know other questions will come soon.
Greetings,
Susanne

Hi my dear antiX-helpers,
I wanted to try the upgrade and followed exactly all your instructions one by one. There was no error message, the new graphics card drivers were installed by the sgfxi script. But after the whole booting process the desktop doesn't start, it's just a dark grey screen. From there I cannot even open a terminal, I have to force down. I did the upgrade process three times from a command line in the third boot option as root: with squeeze, with stable and with testing (everytime by modifiying the souces.list). The result is the same. This new version does not work with my graphics card!!!
Then I downloaded the m11-version, burnt it to cd and tried to run it. It does not even show the boot screen. But I will post
that in the corresponding thread.
I don't think there is another solution than to make new install with the 8.5 version and never upgrade.
Greetings,
Susanne
