Postby harii on Tue Apr 15, 2008 7:28 am

Has anyone else seen this window manager?
http://firebox.intuxication.org/?page=0

looks real nice and lite and has a good review at:
http://urukrama.wordpress.com/

I was trying to use it but when i downloaded it-- it was missing the ~/.firebox files.
maybe i'll wait to try again when LXAppearance and the latest pcmanfm gose to testing.

fixed it: i miss tagged it or something

Firebox looks interesting. Haven't tried it yet, but i've just downloaded the tarballs so i'll give it a go soon. It's certainly very light. :)

the root menu sucks but i really like it.
To get it workable for me i'll need to add icons or a launcher bar---or both?
I even tried deskmenu but it didn't work with firebox.
I'm a menu person but my family likes icons--so it might workout.
what i like is that for a small wm , it's has alot on eye candy.

I haven't tried it yet. Searched around for a .deb but haven't been able to find one yet. I downloaded the source but couldn't get it to compile, and because i was busy doing other stuff i didn't get to find out why it wouldn't... :D

But it looks pretty good, and i love trying out different WM's, DE's etc so i'll definitely give it a try sometime soon. I'm busy trying out LXDE at the moment.... It's a good little system using OpenBox as the WM. Still needs quite a bit of work, but for those that love a DE that's akin to XFCE, it's spot on, and it's incredibly fast lightweight.

I still prefer fluxbox though

If you have any screenshots of Firebox then please post them here if you can..... i'd love to see what it looks like. The screens on the Firebox site are a bit lacking, and there are not that many of them.

Just installing Awesome now - i'll give it a try, although generally i'm not a huge fan of tiled WM's, at least up til now that is. :)

I like the website though..... very minimalistic and the screenshots look interesting.

I also like jwm for its lightness. It's a bit too sparse for me to use on a daily basis {that's why i use fluxbox} but it's still nice and fast.

WTF?

The CIA/FBI/KGB/ are around!

Was that first post covered in wax?

and xToeCutter squeezed lemon on it to reveal all.

A little update:
i asked on the firebox mailing list about the deskmenu and was shocked how fast they responded.

Hello,

About one week ago, I had a look at DeskMenu [1] in order to allow
such a program to work fine with Firebox.

It appeared that DeskMenu needed to be modified to run with an
improved version of Firebox. Indeed, it uses an obsolete Gnome hint
called _WIN_DESKTOP_BUTTON_PROXY [2]. If the current WM doesn't
support this hint, then the program exits.

So I asked the maintainer of DeskMenu, Stefan Pfetzing, if he would be
interested in a patch allowing not Gnome compliant WMs to use
DeskMenu. He said yes. Unfortunately, I learned a few days ago that
he's quite busy at the moment, so he doesn't plan to work on this
soon.

So you can find enclosed the patch I sent. If you try it, feel free to
give feedback !

The patch works with the SVN r242 and the new command line flag
--no-root-menu (for Firebox).

Regards,
Cyrille Bagard

PS: the subversion version currently generates lots of warnings ; the
situation is going to be fixed.

It maybe some time before i can, but it's nice to know a developer cares about the users.

So far, its over my skill level.
I'm building a test box for firebox-wm to test things out. (waiting for m7.2)
Anyone would like to share any How-To's about firebox--I'm game

:D i'm posting screenshot of early working desktop at "The screenshot" area.
Wbar is a very powerful tool that really makes firebox shine.
I might have to get on the mailing list to make sure --wbar & conky is tune right with desktop.

NOTE: some of the themes are not stable--missing parts or something?

ALT+S Dmenu is a great menu.
