I am completely new to this stuff. I just wanted to try out a linux distribution on my old laptop. I tried installing mepis m7 but at one point the installation suddenly stopped.

there were a couple of error messages along the way already, the last ones i could see were the following:
not starting ipw3945 regulatory daemon, driver not loaded
wrong chipset detected. 915resoution only works with intel 800/900 series graphic chipsets
not starting internet superserver: no services enabled
avahi: failed to create client: an unexpected d-bus error occured mpd.

the last two lines before the installation stopped were these:
starting periodic command scheduler: cond.
enabling additional executable binary formats: binfmt-support

My computer kept on spinning the disc and doing stuff, but no new lines appeared for hours. So i take it that something has gone wrong.
Does anyone know what the problem seems to be?

Those three warnings are "normal" for my Toshiba.

I would suspect a bad CD burn might be the issue. I had that same problem when I tried to play around with fluxbuntu over the weekend; a re-burn on another CD resolved the problem.

The other possibility would be that your AMD CPU isn't supported (yet) by antiX.

I think dieselbenz is right that it is a bad burn.
Burn at low speed, X8 recommended.

A question, did this happen when running the cd, or after you installed?

Thanks for your advice. I'll try to get another copy of it.
The messeges did occur during the installation, while the cd was still running.
