To have netbook style application launchers on the desktop one can just 'apt-get install lxlauncher'. It's a very small package.
It uses Debian's menu system so the icons ain't very harmonious. One can change the icons by editing the menu files in /usr/share/menu or by placing the edited files in ~/.menu
One can put other custom menu files in ~/.menu too. Menu file syntax:
http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-man ... l/ch3.html(Installing lxde-icon-theme may help icon wise)
Attached is a litle video made in antiX11 live-CD.
To launch lxlauncher at session login, just put 'lxlauncher &' in the startup file for your window manager of choice (I don't know how well it works with fluxbox, though).
