How about some basics on sign-up and use for some of us who have never used irc?

Yeah, we'll let the 'kids' give us the instructions for irc.
I'm a relative n00b at this too.

antiX comes with irssi (CLI, but very cool!) and xchat (GUI and also the coolest of the GUI chat apps, so I have been told) for this thing.

This is what I do in irssi. NB I'm nowher near an expert at this.

1. Open irssi from the menu
2. Type /connect irc.freenode.net or /connect funky.zoite.net then enter
3. Type /join #antiX (for freenode) or /join #antix (for zoite)
4. To join in the chat, just type your message.

That is the basics as I see it.
Let's hope the irc gurus can help us old fogies out here!

a few useful commands:

/nick desirednickname to change your nickname
/topic to change the channel's topic (if you have the required privileges)
/part to leave a channel

for irssi in particular (which coupled with GNU-screen make a really useful combination) this is the best guide available:

Okay, here's a preliminary report: I just logged onto the zoite irc channel using anti's directions for irssi. Works great. Got a couple of really nice hello's despite my stumbling around.

I was gone for the weekend. Now I will be back in the irc channels. Both of them.

2. Type /connect irc.freenode.irc or /connect funky.zoite.net then enter

This should read "irc.freenode.net or /connect chat.zoite.net"

net because well .irc does not work and chat in case the server you choose is down.

We need to choose a channel eventually. I have had some issues with zoite dropping me, but they are extremely friendly there. I'd hate to leave them. However, I have no ability to control the actual channel in zoite and in freenode I can customize everything perfectly and have yet to be dropped from freenode. There are also a few other factors to consider.

Well, zoite autobanned me from their servers for not having a CTCP reply when using SSL. I guess I will only use irc.freenode.net #antix until my proxy comes through or my ip changes then I will be in both channels again.

Update: I've been unbanned!

Update: I've been auto banned for the same thing again. I quit. No one goes to the channel anyway. I will still hang out in freenode #antix.
