This is for feedback, before making the iso available to all.

I have uploaded a patch (b1-b2_patch) so we are all on the same page.

It is here:

http://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/Testing/antiX-15/

Size: c90MB

Patch antiX-15-beta1 like this.
Code:
xdelta3 -d -s antiX-15-beta1-V_386-full.iso b1-b2_patch antiX-15-beta2-V_386-full.iso

md5sums of patch and resultant iso also uploaded.

NB: You will be prompted for USERNAME password, so for the installer, type demo

This is from the beta 1 feedback.
Code:
1. their are a couple of hiccups in the meta-package installer

a. firefox pulls from the mepiscr testing, which is OK, and installs, however it brings icedove with it and removes iceweasel. icedove does not get pulled in on MX, so not sure what's going on there. also, still has that annoying update message when there is an upstream update. [CANNOT FIX]

b. google-chrome installer fails. This is because the meta-installer can't have bm files with more than the one dash (which separate the category from the name that appears in the installer). just rename to Browser-Google_chrome_stable.bm and it works. No internal code change. [FIXED]

c. netflix-desktop doesn't work (dependency problems, silverlight) [FIXED - BM FILE REMOVED]

d. pipelight doesn't work (dependency problem, silverlight). [FIXED - BM FILE REMOVED]

e. skype leaves behind a deb file. add rm skype-install.deb to the bm file? similar is done in the google-chrome bm already. [FIXED - RM SKYPE-INSTALL ADDED]

2. Sound Card needs an icon for the menu. [FIXED]

3.  Remove Menu Item - desktop shortcut removes from spacefm desktop but not from rox pinboard.

- does not remove existing personal menu items.

- added items do not show up in personal, but they do show up in the remove list, twice.

4. Add Menu Item - Shows up in Applications, but not in Personal.

- categories do not match menu.

5.  Session Settings - consider fully commented user level files here similar to the global. At a minimum, files that need a shebang (startup) should have one by default.

6.  Desktop>Session Settings menu entry does not open all the same files as the corresponding Control Centre entry.

7. consider placing a commented line about using the desktop-session startup entry instead of the various wm startup files. ( In the wm startup files)

8.  Consider a wrapper script for Add Menu Entry and Remove Menu Entry, or at least rename them so they are in the same place in the menu. (Menu Entry - Add and Menu Entry- Remove for instance). (Name add/remove menu entry)

9. Safe Graphics defaulting to to high of resolution / and or do not implement vesa driver 1280x1024, suggest 1024x768(as per rokynji's testing) [FIXED - ALSO ADDED NEW DRIVERS FOR SIS]

10. Long delay with apt-get update for debs.slavino.sk, what comes from this repo? [NEEDED FOR YAD]

11. To many entries in the personal menu by default. Suggest only the add/remove items program and / or what is personal and how to use it.

12. Menu header items redundant due to personal menu...

13. Menu items duplicate what is in the control center. Suggest option be placed in the control center to hide such items as well as the appropriate xdg menu change to honour the Display item.

14. fbxkb still in startup upon installation though only really needed for live system. [WON'T FIX]

15. Conky network monitor unreliable and inconsistant wired / wireless networking presets. (http://antix.freeforums.org/post39696.html#p39696) Maybe a good udev rule for network interface detection? [DO NOTHING AS ALREADY FIXED IN BETA1 - WAS IT A BUG?]

16. Connect shares missing depends, nfs-common [FIXED]

17. add/remove program does not remove the initial default programs from the personal menu.

18. keys file (or desktop-defaults-run) still buggered. pressing CTRL + SHIFT + F  for root file manager opens and imediately closes or does not do anything.

19. Default wallpaper having world in lower right gets covered by the panels, suggest redesign of wallpaper or different wallpaper. [FIXED]

20. usb automount / mountpoint building... spacefm -d or udev rule ???[FIXED]

21. If not using default desktop session, the install icon is missing.

22. need a synaptic as root override .desktop file in /usr/share/applications/antix/

23. controlCentre --} Hardware tab --} Select sound card
If the "Cancel" button is clicked, the dialog box titlebar and window border disappear. [WON'T FIX]

24. controlCentre --} Hardware tab --} PC Information
select "Repository"
information is displayed to a roxterm window _AND_ a yad dialog inviting "Edit repositories" is displayed.
Clicking "OK" causes the utility to abend/close.[FIXED]

25. The pre-installed "FlashBock" addon has become obsolete/redundant. Iceweasel now provides "Click to Play" permissions for each individual plugin, including Flash.[FIXED]

26. Windows open in top left rather than center screen, causing MASSIVE mouse movements to be neccessary[ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THIS]

27. Rox-filer and spacefm missing default text editors for root.[FIXED]

28. Startup persistance config missing option to select persistance file format.[WE HAVE CHANGED HOW THIS IS DONE IN antiX-15, so WON'T FIX]

29. Startup jumping the gun with desktop icons starting before icewm again.[?]

30. Wallpaper app limited / autodetection of desktop types and their limits is disliked. Look into what the new limits of the desktop setting programs are (rox / space / none)[?]

31. Rox color themes buggered when switching gtk themes.[FIXED WITH BOOT THEME OPTION]

32. splash=off boot parameter only seems to switch off the splash screen for VT1[FIXED]

33. default user groups in live / installer of first user configuration do not match that of add-user for 2nd and later users [FIXED - ADDED LPADMIN, SCANNER]

34. Make manual /  help window autostart on herbsluftfm as it is easy to get stuck in that window manager and not get out.[TO DO]

35. checking save passwords in the gksu dialog is broken. (http://antix.freeforums.org/post40266.html#p40266) [FIXED]

If you don't like the dark theme, running live F6 you can choose between Light and Dark. Default is Dark.
If you want to keep the Light theme on installation, make sure you check the Save live desktop changes box in the installer.

Could be wrong, but with a quick patch and look it seems that
Code:
18. keys file (or desktop-defaults-run) still buggered. pressing CTRL + SHIFT + F  for root file manager opens and imediately closes or does not do anything.

and
Code:
21. If not using default desktop session, the install icon is missing.

Are also fixed.

Maybe I had tweaked the per-app settings (for fluxbox) while using previous builds?
http://www.fluxbox.org/help/man-fluxbox-apps.php
Looking at it now, I don't see any other way "open gexec dialog window somewhere other than top-left" could be accomplished.

edit:
For fluxbox, the solution is a simple one-time operation.
Click "Run" in fluxbox desktop menu, and drag the gexec dialog window wherever you like
then right-click the taskbar button for eExec and hover "Remember..." and click "Position.
Afterward, each new instance of the gexec window will open at this same position.

remaining issue, same as reported previously:
In live persistence, stranded files are still accumulating in the aufs_plnk directory (and are being needlessly saved in the persistence file).

Choosing the first boot menu option results in it using the ati, radeon driver at my display's 1600x900 native resolution, but it takes quite a long time to boot (over six minutes). The live boot logs are included.

It boots a lot faster when I choose the 'Safe Video Mode' and 'Failsafe Boot' options. With those I also get a 1600x900 resolution, but it uses the fbdev, ati video driver.

some notes:

1. file-roller archive manager (menu>accessories>archive manager) has no title bar, menus, or resize handles on the window.

2. periodically on this system, the icewm decorations on the windows disappear. (minimize, maximize, close, and resize handles). so far I've only noticed it with a combination of root and user launched apps. I've attached a screenshot to illustrate. I did NOT encounter this situation on the beta 1. restarting icewm clears up the problem.

3. I see that the persistent device names for the network interfaces are not saved between boots on the persistence side of things. this is good for the lion's share of folks with ethX and wlanX as their devices. There might still be headaches/inconsistencies for those with multiple ethX intefaces as they will still be interchangeable names at boot. shouldn't matter to an installed system. those lines in the excludes files could be commented out on a frugal install or on a live media that is only used on one machine.

I've seen this on earlier versions. Since restarting IceWM fixes it, the problem is probably not caused by ownership of files under /home/demo changed to root. But like D.O. I only saw it after a GUI app was run as root. In my case I was installing the Google Chrome browser and it ran some GUI app as root to do the install. Right after that I lost the window decoration buttons. But I was unable to replicate the problem when I did the same procedure on a fresh Live system.

But seriously.... it is the intermediate program that is handling the starting and stopping of all the programs that build the "session". So when you feed it the code "space-icewm" it knows what to start. This also is what is trying to setup the default programs and the attempts at incorporating the XDG standards... Basically everything that you see in / etc/desktop-session/desktop-session.conf is what it does in the simplest form... there is a bit more and maybe I can make a list of everything it does to the "T".

It is what allows you to switch from one window manager to another (via the Desktop --> Alternate Desktops menu) without closing all of your windows. AFAIK, this is the main reason it has to stay running. I'm not certain, but I think most of the other features could still be used if desktop-session exited after launching the window manager. It's a bash shell script so assuming Bash is (or will be) used elsewhere then the extra resources it uses should be small.

The alternate desktop feature is very powerful for a distro that comes with several windows managers installed. For example, I think it would be handy for creating a video that shows off the various window managers that come with antiX. It sure beats logging out and then using F1 to select a window manager and then logging in again via SLiM. A kind of broken version of this feature existed years ago but I think it launched the new window manager without killing the old one so things stacked up and became messy.

remaining issue, same as reported previously:
In live persistence, stranded files are still accumulating in the aufs_plnk directory (and are being needlessly saved in the persistence file).

Good catch. Here is a link to your original report.

I think I was able to replicate the problem here on a fresh live system with no persistence by running:
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install zsh
ls -l /live/aufs-ram/.wh..wh.plnk/
There was an "inode" file there that took up about a meg.

I think solution is to install the aufs-tools package and run:
Code:
auplink /live/aufs flush

On the fresh system with only zsh and aufs-tools installed, this took about a second. It may take much longer if there has been a lot more file system activity.

Please see if this prescription works for you. I'm also curious about how long it takes to run if you have installed a lot of packages. It should be easy to have persist-save call "auplink /live/aufs flush" if it can find the auplink program. I can also call it when we shut down a system that uses static root persistence.

BTW: here is some documentation about aufs plinks but it is a little outdated. For example it says auplink is a script but now it is a compiled executable.

aufs author stated on mailinglist that files should not accumulate in the plnk directory.
New files show up there each time a currently installed debian package is upgraded (just an observation) and quite a lot (200Mb+) can accumulate during a single long-running session.
I haven't tried the "flush" method.
My handling: I've added the plnk path to my persist-save excludes file and, during a long session, manually delete the contents of the plnk dir.

"auplink" I had read that it was now (now=then, when I read it) obsolete. Several months have passed since I checked the docs.

Re aufs - It only seems to add files on the very first run of installing a deb. I installed audacious, and a file appeared. I then installed xfe and no new file(s) show up.
I also tried auplink /live/aufs flush and installed another app, no new files.
