antiX-13-beta1 base isos available for testing in 32 and 64 bit. (c365MB)

3.6.11 kernel
dist-upgrade to 07 Feb 2013
more options in meta-installer
mupdf replaces epdfview and zathura
mc removed use ranger for cli filer
installers now give xfs, jfs, ext2 as options. btrfs is avaliable, but only use for data, not for installing onto.
numerous 'internal' changes to antiX scripts

https://sourceforge.net/projects/antix- ... s/Testing/

Enjoy!

i was quite fond of mc :| i'll give ranger a try to see how it goes.
mupdf seams simpler than zathura. my question is: how do i fit the page to the entire size of the screen? w seams to do the opposite.

Very nice so far. 64 bit runs 80mb @ idle.
The "edit login options" worked very well to change my default desktop to Fluxbox-no icons.
I could never get this to work on a hard drive installation in the 12.5 release.
On to more testing.

This is very disappointing. MC is (and has been for many years) the de facto standard for CLI file managers. Ranger simply isn't in the same class. I would request that the decision to omit it is considered again, and that it be retained for antiX-full.

OK..on to doing an antixsnapshot and then using new_usb.sh to make a live USB from that snapshot.
Made the antixsnapshot and the USB successfully.
Used the USB and the cli-installer to do a hard drive install.
Booted the hard drive install and fstab is empty. Can't access any other partitions or devices with Rox-filer or mountbox.
I then tried the same process with live-init added to the USB but still nothing written to fstab.
I ran make-fstab and this successfully populated my fstab and Rox found every available partition and device EXCEPT I cannot mount my USB devices. My USB displays as device sdb1 but I cannot mount it :?:

The gui installer has a bug:
The selector box for time zone now says "Local" which is a good change.
However, the instructions in the side box still are referring to Universal time.

OK, I am snagging antiX-13-beta1 now. Since there has been quite a bit that has changed since antiX-12.5-Alpha2, I'll give this one a good wringing out, first running it live, then I'll install it over my existing image (though I've actually been VERY HAPPY with it! In fact, less than an hour ago, I was just complementing both antiX and MEPIS on their quality of anything past Alpha 1. Heck, sometimes even Alpha 1 builds work perfectly! In any case, I look forward to testing this one out, and thanks already, those of you who beat me to it, and to anti for putting together more good stuff, and also for listening to those who make suggestions. Great stuff! I'll give feedback once I get my hands on it again. ;-)

I just finished the installation. I installed the base implementation, reused sda7, where I had a previous test version, and I installed GRUB, not to the MBR, but to the sda7 partition. All of these parameters were accepted. I'll check it out next and see if I encounter any issues.

So far, I've run live, which I'm still doing, and I've reinstalled over a previous image, retaining home, and that appeared to work fine, as it usually does.

I could not agree more! Thanks, anti, for your flexibility, and thank you, SamK, for your kindness in recognizing what we have here and not simply taking it for granted.

Great stuff; running on the installed image now, and looking good!

If replacement pdf readers are being considered, Foxit-Reader is worth looking at. I have used it for a long time without a hitch. It is a good choice for both older and newer kit.
Main benefits:
  • It is tiny. Size after installation=6326kB
  • Has no dependecies
  • Requires very little RAM
  • Makes few demands on CPU
  • Is very responsive in use
  • How to use it is obvious and intuitive because its interface is familiar and simple

Edit: removed reference to obtaining from Debian repo.
